On exchange with eSSENCE: Valentina Schüller

In the spring of 2026, Valentina Schüller from Lund University participated in an exchange visit within the eSSENCE exchange program at Uppsala University. Building on an ongoing collaboration between the two research groups, the visit offered an opportunity to strengthen academic connections and explore future collaboration. After the visit, we asked a few questions about the experience.

How has the collaboration contributed to your research?
During my time in Uppsala, I could really focus and progress on the research project we have with Roman Iakymchuk, Associate Professor at the Department of Information Technology. We had daily meetings and very productive discussions that resulted in a clarified research question, some new experimental results, and concrete progress on the writing. For example, we came up with a simple model to estimate potential energy-to-solution savings when adjusting CPU frequency when running load-imbalanced codes.
How has the eSSENCE Exchange collaboration contributed to your network?
I got to spend time not only with Roman and his PhD student, Léo Béchet, but talked with many more researchers and PhD students at the Division of Scientific Computing. I had met some of them at conferences (e.g., the e-Science Academy) before; the lunch and coffee breaks at the Ångström Laboratory were a great opportunity to follow up on previous discussions and introduce myself to some new people.
What do you hope the collaboration will lead to in the long term?
This exchange builds on the existing collaboration between Roman and my supervisor in Lund, Philipp Birken. Philipp visited Roman last year read more about the visit here. Since then, Léo started working in Roman’s group and my visit was a nice opportunity to “extend" the collaboration between our groups into the next academic generation.
