Funding through eSSENCE

eSSENCE offers funding for researchers at Lund University, Umeå University, and Uppsala University. Apart from project support, there are two special activity programmes: eSSENCE Exchanges, which funds research visits between the partner universities and eSSENCE MeetUps, which supports conferences, workshops, and other meetings with a clear e-science profile.

Questions?

For questions about funding, please contact Stefan Engblom.

Acknowledgment

Support from eSSENCE should be acknowledged, for example, at websites and printed material of conferences. For publications we suggest the following wording: "We acknowledge the support of eSSENCE, a Swedish strategic research programme in e-Science".

eSSENCE Exchanges

eSSENCE offers funding to support research exchanges between our three partner universities: Lund University, Umeå University, and Uppsala University. The goal is to strengthen collaborations and knowledge sharing within the e-science community.

Guidelines

  • The grant covers travel and accommodation costs up to a maximum of 20,000 SEK.
  • An additional 25% for indirect costs (overhead) may be included.
  • Salary-related costs, such as per diem, are not eligible.
  • Longer visits (approximately 1–2 weeks) are prioritised.

How to Apply

Applications should include:

  • A brief (max 1 A4 page) summary of the purpose and goals of the visit
  • A budget, clearly indicating direct and indirect costs, and any co-funding
  • The proposed time frame for the exchange
  • Names and affiliations of both the visitor(s) and host(s)

Applications are accepted during term time, and decisions are usually communicated two to three months after the application has been received by eSSENCE.

After the visit

  • Recipients are asked to participate in a short written interview and provide a photo that may be used for communication on the eSSENCE website.

eSSENCE MeetUps

eSSENCE supports e-science research and offers dedicated funding for meeting activities such as conferences and workshops.

Guidelines

  • Support is provided for activities in Sweden with a clear e-science profile, in line with the eSSENCE vision and focus areas of eSSENCE.
  • We prioritise applications that include co-funding rather than those seeking full funding.
  • Applications concerning activities planned within four months will be less prioritised.
  • Typically, we fund up to approximately 50% of the total budget for the activity, with a maximum of 250,000 SEK.
  • Organisers are asked to participate in a short written interview and provide a photo that may be used for communication on the eSSENCE website.

How to Apply

The application should include a brief summary and justification of the purpose (maximum 2 A4 pages), along with a budget that clearly shows the funding needs and any co-funding. For already funded activities, state clearly what the additional eSSENCE funds are expected to contribute.

Applications are accepted and processed during term time, and decisions are usually communicated two to three months after the application has been received by eSSENCE.
